Hailstorm over Gangtok in Sikkim on 14th February 2018

    Due to last week’s Western Disturbance which passed through the Western Himalayan Region, a thunderstorm accompanied with hail occurred over Gangtok on 14th February between 1600 to 1610 hours IST of 14th February 2018 and scattered rainfall occurred over Arunachal Pradesh and at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya between 0830 hours IST of 14th and 0830 hours IST of 16th February.
    Due to Western Disturbance that passed through the Western Himalayan Region, isolated rain/snow occurred over Jammu & Kashmir between 0830 hours IST of 14th and 0830 hours IST of 16th February and scattered rainfall also occurred over Arunachal Pradesh and at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya between 0830 hours IST of 17th and 0830 hours IST of 20th February.
    Due to Western Disturbance which passed through the Western Himalayan Region, scattered rain/snow occurred over Jammu & Kashmir between 0830 hours IST of 20th and 0830 hours IST of 21st February.
    Light rain also occurred over Tamil Nadu & Puducherry on one/two days of the week.
 
    FOG & COLD WAVE
 
    1. Due to the path of the Western Disturbances moving through the Western Himalayan Region, dense fog & cold wave conditions have not occurred during the week over plains of northwest India.
 
    During the week lowest minimum temperature of 4.8°C was recorded on 18th February 2018 at Varanasi (east Uttar Pradesh) in the plains of the country.
During the week the lowest maximum temperature of 20.4°cC was recorded on 14th February 2018 at Chapra (Bihar) in the plains of the country.
The cumulative rainfall sub-division wise for the week (15-21 February 2018) predicted by IMD GFS model shows that normal rainfall would occur over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Konkan & Goa and coastal Karnataka and largely deficient rainfall would occur over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal & Sikkim, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, Kerala, Lakshadweep and northeastern states, whereas Himachal Pradesh, Konkan & Goa, coastal Karnataka, gangetic West Bengal, Kerala and Lakshadweep have not received any rainfall. Arunachal Pradesh has received normal rainfall and Andaman & Nicobar islands received largely deficient rainfall. Overall model has predicted well for 28 out of 36 sub-divisions of the country.
During the week, rainfall over the country as a whole was 87 per cent below the Long Period Average (LPA). Out of four broad homogeneous regions of the country, central India has not received any rainfall, while the other three received largely deficient rainfall. Details of rainfall distribution over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:
For the country as a whole, cumulative rainfall of the winter season was 64 per cent below the Long Period Average (LPA) as on 21st February 2018. Cumulative rainfall was deficient over all the broad homogeneous regions of the country. Rainfall was excess over Andaman & Nicobar Islands; Marathawada and Vidarbha; normal over Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Kerala; deficient over Arunachal Pradesh, Punjab, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, north interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and Lakshadweep. The other sub-divisions received largely deficient rainfall over the rest of the sub-divisions of the country except Gangetic West Bengal and Saurashtra; Kutch & Diu have not received any rainfall. Details of rainfall distribution over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:
Rainfall will be above normal over the western Himalayan region; near normal over northeastern states and the southern peninsula. Heavy rain/snow will occur at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir. Thunderstorm accompanied with hail will occur at isolated places over plains of northwest India and central India.
Rainfall will be above normal over the western Himalayan region and near normal over northeastern states.
