Almost all districts unerringly affected by floods in Bihar

Almost all districts are affected by floods in Bihar. Those areas falling under the high to very high flood risk are concentrated in the districts of East Champaran, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Saharsa, Sitamarhi, Madhubani and Khagaria. In the period between 1998 to 2009, 26.09 per cent of the total land area of 94.16 lakh hectares was affected by floods in Bihar. The total flood affected area is 24.56 lakh hectares out of which about 0.83 lakh hectares come under the very high flood hazard category. The high risk category comprise 1.24 lakh hectares and 2.70 lakh hectares comprise the moderate flood hazard category.  A total of 5.24 lakh hectares and 14.56 lakh hectares fall under the low and very low flood hazard categories respectively. In percentages, about 8 per cent of the total land area falls in the high to very high categories. Nearly 12 per cent of land falls in the moderate category, while 81 per cent of the land falls in the low to very low category.
