The first national policy on education was announced by Indira Gandhi in 1968. The
policy stressed on moral education and a sense of social responsibility to the nation.
It also stressed on equal opportunities of education for all forms of society. It was
modified in 1992 to keep intact the values of secularism, socialism and democracy in
the constitution. In the 21 st century, NPE included proposals for the
internationalisation of Indian education. In 2016, features related to social and
national identity were missing from the policy.
