Weekly Weather Update (05-11 October 2017)

Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over northern Bay of Bengal & neighboring areas, a low pressure area formed over northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Bangladesh at 0830 hours IST of 8 October 2017. It became well marked over northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Bangladesh & coastal West Bengal.at 1730 hours IST over northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Bangladesh & coastal West Bengal and concentrated into a depression at 0530 hours IST of 09 October 2017 near Kolkata. Moving in west-northwesterly direction it intensified into a deep depression at 0830 hrs IST. Moving in west-northwesterly direction it weakened as a depression over Jharkhand & adjoining West Bengal nead Dhanbad at 1130 hours IST of the 10th and weakened into a low pressure area at 1730 hours IST over the same area. It caused heavy to very heavy rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal & Jharkhand on 9th & 10th and over Bihar on the 10th. A trough from North Interior Karnataka & adjoining south Madhya Maharashtra & south Konkan to Odisha across Telangana & south Chhattisgarh caused heavy to very heavy rainfall over Peninsula on some days of the week. Southwest monsoon has further withdrawn from remaining parts of Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh & East Rajasthan; some parts of East Uttar Pradesh and some more parts of north Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat region on 11th October 2017, thus covering Northwest India except parts of East Uttar Pradesh. During the week (05-11 October 2017) Most of the Sub-Divisions of Eastern India & the Southern Peninsula and some of the Sub-Divisions of Central India received excess/normal rainfall.
During the week, rainfall over the country as a whole was 17 per cent above the long period average (LPA). .Northwestern India received deficient rainfall. Details of the rainfall distribution over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:

For the country as a whole, cumulative rainfall was 5 per cent above LPA as on 11th October 2017. Cumulative rainfall was deficient over Northwestern India. Rainfall was excess/normal over the most of Sub-divisions of Eastern India & Southern Peninsula and some of the Sub-Divisions of Central India. Details of the rainfall distribution over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:

Forecast for the week (12-18 October 2017) The cyclonic circulation over the central & north Bay of Bengal and adjoining eastern coastal regions of India will lead to above normal rainfall activity over most of eastern coastal states, north eastern states, southern peninsula and the adjoining south-eastern Arabian Sea.  
Rainfall is expected to decrease over Southern Peninsula. However, above normal rainfall over Northeastern states and adjoining eastern states of India will continue (NE states, GWB, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, parts of east UP, Chhattisgarh, parts of east MP).
