Weekly Weather Update (12-18 October 2017)

Last week’s cyclonic circulation over Madhya Maharashtra & neighbouring areas laid over northeast Arabian Sea & adjoining Konkan & Gujarat on 12th. & 13th, progressed over north Konkan south-Gujarat region and neighbouring areas on 14th and became less marked on 15th.  Due to this system heavy to very rainfall occurred over Gujarat state on 12th & 13th , over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra & Marathawada on 12th , 13th  & 14th. The east-west shear zone lay roughly along lat 12°N across the southern peninsula on many days of the week. Due to this system heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred over the southern peninsula from 12th to 16th October.

Southwest monsoon has further withdrawn from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, some more parts of Gujarat and some parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar on 15th October 2017. It further withdrawn from the remaining parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, entire West Bengal & Sikkim, some parts of west Assam & Meghalaya, north west Bay of Bengal, Odisha, some more parts of  Chhattisgarh and maharashtra and  remaining parts of gujarat state and north arabian sea on 16th .and from most parts of northeastern states, some more parts of northwest Bay of Bengal, some parts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh, remaining parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha & some more parts of Marathwada on 17th. Thus the monsoon has withdrawn from northwest India, central India, east India and most parts of northest India and some parts of the southern peninsula. During the week (12-18 October 2017) Most of the Sub-Divisions of northeast India & the Southern Peninsula received excess/normal rainfall and most of the Sub-Divisions of Northwest India received large deficient/no rainfall.
During the week, rainfall over the country as a whole was 10 per cent above the long period average (LPA). Northwest India received deficient rainfall. Details of the rainfall distribution over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:

For the country as a whole, cumulative rainfall was 6 per cent above LPA as on 18th October 2017. Cumulative rainfall was largely deficient over all the sub-divisions of Northwest India. Rainfall was excess/normal over all the Sub-divisions of East & Northeast India & South Peninsula and many Sub-divisions of East India. Details of the rainfall distribution over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:

The cyclonic circulation over the Odisha and neighbouring areas  will make the above normal rainfall activity over most of the Sub-Divisions of East & Northeast India and south Peninsula and some parts of Central India will received normal/below normal rainfall. Outlook for the week (27 October-02 November 2017) Rainfall is expected normal/above normal rainfall over parts of northeastern states and south Peninsula.
