Weekly Weather Update (28 September to 04 October 2017)

A cyclonic circulation formed over West Bengal & adjoining Jharkhand and Bihar and a trough formed from east Bihar to north Chhattisgarh, and due to this system, heavy to very with extremely heavy rain occrred at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam  & Meghalaya on 28th, 29th & 30th September 2017 leading to flood type situations in the districts of Lakhimpur, South Salmara, Goalpara, Hojai and Karbi Anglong of ASSAM. The cyclonic circulation over interior Odisha & neighbouring areas was between 1.5 km & 3.1 km above mean sea level. However, the trough from this cyclonic circulation moving to south Coastal Karnataka was between 0.9 km & 1.5 Km above mean sea level across Telangana, Rayalaseema and South Interior Karnataka, and due to this system heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred over southern Peninsula during 30  September to 04 October 2017.

The Southwest Monsoon however, had further withdrawn from the remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, West Rajasthan, Kutch, entire Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, some parts of Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh, most parts of East Rajasthan, some parts of West Madhya Pradesh, north Gujarat region, Saurashtra and some more parts of north Arabian Sea as of 30th September 2017.                                                                      Source: IMD

During the week (28 September to 04 October 2017), all the Sub-Divisions of Northwest India & Most Sub-Divisions of Central India received large deficient/ no rainfall. Large Deficit occurred in 10 Sub-divisions & 5 Sub-Divisions have not received any rainfall.  
During the week, rainfall over the country as a whole was 03 percent below the long period average (LPA).  East & Northeast India and South Peninsula received excess rainfall. Details of the rainfall distribution over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:

Forecast for the week (5-11 October 2017) Monsoon will be above normal over central India, eastern coastal regions, southern peninsula, and also over Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal & Sikkim due to formation of Low Pressure Area over North Bay of Bengal. Outlook for the week (12-18 October 2017) Rainfall will be above normal over the country except Northwest India and some parts of central India.
