Weekly Weather Update 31 August to 06 September 2017

The last week’s low pressure area laid over Kutch & adjoining areas of south Pakistan & northeastern Arabian Sea on 31st August and  over south Pakistan & its neighbourhood on 1st September and on 2nd September . Due to this system heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred over Saurashtra & Kutch on 31st August 2017. The axis of monsoon trough at mean sea level ran close to the foothills of the Himalayas from 3rd until today resulting in weak monsoon conditions. Cyclonic circulation and associated north-south trough over Eastern India and Bagladesh caused heavy to very heavy rainfall over east & northeast India from 1st to 5th September 2017.

 Data Source: India Meteorological Department heavy rainfall During the week (31 August to 06 September 2017),   rainfall over the country as a whole was - 23%.  Maximum deficiency of -63% was recorded over Central India. However southern parts of peninsula received good amount (+36%) of rainfall.rainfall .
During the week rainfall over the country as a whole was 23 per cent below the long period average (LPA). Out of four broad homogeneous regions South India has received 36 per cent above LPA. Details of the rainfall distribution over the four broad homogeneous regions of India are given below:

monsoon activity The monsoon activity will be mainly over the southern peninsula associated with the movement of the synoptic system during 10-12 September, 2017. Above normal rainfall is expected over southern Peninsula (Mainly over Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema, Kerala and Karnataka), Maharashtra and southern parts of northeastern states with normal rainfall likely over Chhattisgarh, Odisha, GWB and Jharkhand. Whereas, remaining parts of central India, western India and northern India are likely to witness subdued rainfall activity. For the country as a whole it is expected to be close to normal with tendency of slight negative departure.
