PROF TARUN KANTI NASKAR
Prof. Tarun Kanti is a seasoned educationist, and former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from West Bengal. Currently serving as the General Secretary of the All India Save Education Committee (AISEC), he plays a pivotal role in shaping national discourse on education policy in India.
With extensive experience in education reform and grassroots activism, Prof. Kanti has been at the forefront of critiquing the National Education Policy (NEP). Under his leadership, AISEC has consistently voiced strong opposition to the NEP, arguing that it undermines the principles of equity, accessibility, and democratic governance in education. His combined experience in public service and academic advocacy makes him a powerful voice in the ongoing national debate on the future of education in India.
The foundational principle upon which our education systems rest is fundamentally based on the democratic values of: secularism, federalism, liberty, and equality. The New Education Policy (NEP), 2020 aims to abide by these principles as well. However, critics have argued that the NEP categorically fails to commit to these values. In this episode of Building Educated India, we participate in a conversation with Prof. Tarun Kanti Naskar – General Secretary of All India Save Education Committee (AISEC) and former Member of Legislative Assembly, West Bengal – to understand the basic tenets of the NEP. Particularly, the conversation delves into highlighting some of the perceived shortcomings of the policy and consequently on the fate of Indian higher education.
