The Air We Fear

Air pollution in India is a growing crisis, with the nation recording some of the highest pollution levels. With 140 million people breathing air 10 times or more over the WHO safe limit, it is not surprising that The Lancet Planetary Health in 2019 found air pollution to be accounting for 17.8% of deaths in the country.

A study by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago found that the lifespan of people in India is cut short by 4.3 years, which also has adverse economic repercussions. In 2019, the financial losses from premature deaths and health issues caused by air pollution were USD 28.8 billion (ranging from 21.4 to 37.4 billion) and USD 8.0 billion (ranging from 5.9 to 10.3 billion), respectively. This underscores the severe economic challenge posed by air pollution.

Given the severe challenge that air pollution poses for the progress of the individual and the country, the need to generate awareness cannot be over-emphasized. With a lineup of scientists, doctors, and lawyers, we hope to present a comprehensive view that will assist all in better negotiating the crisis.

Together, we can reshape our understanding and develop actionable solutions for better air quality and a healthier, more sustainable future.
