IN CONVERSATION WITH PROF SAGNIK DEY

Eminent Atmospheric Scientist and Air Quality Expert.

Prof. Sagnik Dey is a leading authority in atmospheric sciences, widely recognized for his pioneering research on air pollution and its impact on public health and climate. He currently serves as a Professor at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, and as an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Health Policy and Management, Korea University, Seoul, South Korea.

A key highlight of Prof. Dey’s career is his involvement with NASA’s MAIA (Multi-Angle Imager for Aerosols) mission, where his expertise contributes to bridging atmospheric science with public health. He is also the Coordinator of the Centre of Excellence for Research on Clean Air (CERCA) at IIT Delhi, and an Associate Faculty member at the School of Public Policy and the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre (TRIPC), reflecting his multidisciplinary engagement.

Prof. Dey completed his M.Sc. in Applied Geoscience from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and earned both his M.Tech. and Ph.D. from IIT Kanpur. He further enriched his academic journey through postdoctoral research at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA.

His achievements have earned him numerous accolades, including the INSA Young Scientist Medal (2008), the NASI-SCOPUS Young Scientist Award (2012), and the Teaching Excellence Award from IIT Delhi (2016). From 2019 to 2024, he held the prestigious title of Institute Chair Professor at IIT Delhi.
